The London 5

Here we start at the beginning. In order to understand what caused the Calamity we need to start with the sudden disappearance of the London 5 in 2015.

The London 5 were Riya Patel, Timothy Hale, Kit Gerrard, Genevieve Bladt and Penelope Fawley. All disappeared without a trace within hours of each other. These were no ordinary Witches and Wizards, they were Aurors with the exception of Kit who was a Daily Prophet reporter. With no evidence and no witnesses, to this day there has never been a case like it. The investigation led by Harry Potter went on for years and the Ministry eventually dropped the case, leaving families distraught.

During a public hearing, Grim Fawley, husband of the missing Penelope (married in 2006), Fawley gave a stirring monologue in front of the Wizengamot to try and keep the investigation open. He was later escorted from the chamber. We also learnt that Harry Potter also wished to keep the investigation open. Others, such as Gethsemane Prickle, disagreed. The investigation was dropped due to financial reasons.

We have evidence to suggest that the financial breakdown provided at the hearing does not add up, so what could be the real reason? So what does this have to do with the Calamity? Everything - we, at the Taskforce Times, have documentation pointing towards Grim Fawley being responsible for the chaos we now face.

Grim Fawley

Grim Fawley is widely believed to have caused The Calamity we are all facing.  Grim has been awarded the title of “Causer of Chaos 2019”. This award was previously held only by Lord Voldemort and Gellert Grindelwald.

Grim was born in England in 1985. He was raised by his parents Marshall and Lucretia both of whom died in the Second Wizarding War, when Grim was a child.  Grim was then moved to various orphanages but despite this he did well in school.

While attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry he was sorted into Hufflepuff. It soon became apparent that he was a very gifted student, attaining five Outstandings and one Exceeded Expectations on his N.E.W.T.s.

Grim originally started work at the ministry as a research assistant in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Grim was later promoted to an Unspeakable in the Department of Mysteries after encouragement from Penelope, who he met through work. This caused quite the scandal as Penelope was several years older than Grim. They later married in 2006.

Gareth Greengrass, Senior Unspeakable, says “Grim Fawley has more magical talent in his little finger than most of us do in our whole bodies”.

Sage Bragnam, Head Curator of the Department of Magical Artefacts says “Grim's experience with runes and languages was unmatched”. Sage Bragnam praised his ability to transcribe a particular ancient tome that had never before been translated.

Grim and Penelope had two children, Addison and Melody who are now without both their mother and father, their whereabouts are currently unknown.

We have learned of a heroic act by Grim in the Brain Room of the Department of Mysteries, whereby he rescued the watchwizard, Eric Munch. It is unknown why Eric was in the Brain Room.

Some time after Penelope and the rest of the London 5 went missing. Years later the case was abandoned by the ministry citing that the cost of the investigation was too high.

Grim approached Harry Potter himself, as Grim’s own superior Gareth Greengrass, who previously promised to spare no expense, refused to reopen the investigation.

It is alleged Harry did continue investigations off the books. Harry denies that this happened, stating that he “wasn’t prepared to break Ministry protocol”.

Harry goes on to talk about Grim. “He was quiet, but had a wicked sense of humour. But when she (Penelope) went missing he changed. I think a piece of him broke.

Gareth Greengrass says “I saw Penelope as something of a daughter. She was smart, ambitious, stubborn. Delightful.  Her disappearance nearly destroyed me with grief, but it had been years”.

What happens next is rather patchy.  We have learned that Grim was not allowed to see what assignment Penelope was on when she went missing. Harry Potter states that “The files had been sealed by decree and kept from everyone”.  It is currently unknown where the decree came from.

Due to issues at work because of his grief, Gareth Greengrass  was receiving complaints about Grim, he then put in a recommendation for a leave of absence. This, according to Gareth Greengrass, gave Grim more time to obsess over the disappearance rather than heal over his loss.

The current location of Grim is unknown.  Our next article will be about Penelope Fawley and the wand she left behind, is she as innocent as we are led to believe? We’ll then move onto the cause of the calamity itself.

Penelope Fawley

So far in this series we have covered The London 5 and Grim Fawley. We now move on to Penelope Fawley. Penelope is the wife of Grim and one of the London 5 who went missing. In order to understand the Calamity we need to look at everyone involved and Penelope proves to be a rather interesting person indeed.

Penelope Fawley, born Padgett was born in the British Isles in 1982. She attended Hogwarts School during the 1990s where she was sorted into Slytherin.  She did very well at school and was also made prefect in her 5th year.

Both Penelope’s parents were supporters of Lord Voldemort during the Second Wizarding War. Her mother was later imprisoned for her involvement and gifted Penelope her Comet 260 broomstick.

Despite this dark upbringing, Penelope joined the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and brought her ambitious side with her.

This shadow from her past would continue to haunt Penelope as Gethsemane Prickle, Head of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures sent Harry a rather scathing memo. “Be careful with that Padgett woman, Potter. Her parents were followers of You-Know-Who, and you know the apple rarely falls far from the tree. She's trouble, mark my words.”

During her time at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement she met Grim Fawley, they fell in love and began dating in 2005. They both feared that having a public relationship would result in one of them being transferred so they opted to keep it private and to use coded messages.

Penelope excelled in her role and became an Auror within two years. Harry Potter described her as "one of the finest candidates" he had even seen.

Not known to be a rule follower Penelope often wanted to do things her own way, though this was common amongst Aurors.  Her work was often seen as outstanding and nothing of concern ever came up.

After dating Grim for a year they finally made the relationship public, it was seen as a bit of a scandal at the time but the Ministry did not take any action. They both got married in June 2006 and they had twins Addison and Melody.
The location of Penelope is currently unknown.
